"U-Multirank": VGTU received the majority of positive scores
A new international ranking system "U-Multirank" was launched yesterday for the first time, and among eight hundred seventy nine higher education institutions from seventy countries, the universities of Lithuania were also assessed. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) received the highest scores – nine points, for Bachelor, Master and Doctoral studies. Vilnius University (VU) received seven highest scores, followed by Kaunas Technology University (KTU) and Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), both with six highest scores.
In the multidimensional "U-Multirank", the activities of higher education institutions and universities are assessed in accordance with thirty one activity criteria, grouped into five areas: quality of teaching and learning, reputation for research, success in knowledge transfer, international orientation and contribution to regional growth. In five score scale each criteria ranges from "very well" to "weak".
By the best score, Lithuanian higher education institutions were assessed for the regional engagement. For example, even seven from nine Lithuanian higher education institutions, signed up for the rating, received the highest score for the Bachelor employment. VGTU, VU, KTU and VMU received the highest scores for the Master graduates’ integration to the labour market. "U-Multirank" ranking system includes VGTU, VU, KTU, VMU, Vilnius University International Business School (VU IBS), as well as Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai and Marijampole colleges.
More than a half (about 60 percent) of VGTU indicators are assessed "very well" or "well". In addition to the regional engagement, the highest position in the ranking our University received for the research citations in the top cited scientific publications, the spins-off, the art related output, the income from private and regional sources, the Bachelor studies in English and the students’ mobility.
"VGTU received the majority of positive scores, analysing all the indicators of the higher education institutions of Lithuania. It shows, that VGTU is an international university, and at the same time, important for the region, preparing qualified and necessary professionals for the labour market," - said prof. Dr. A. Daniunas, Rector of VGTU.
The new rating is convenient for the comparison of the higher education institutions in an interactive, user-friendly online platform. "U-Multirank" is an important tool for the future students all over the world, because it is the first global and different profiles reflecting ranking system for higher education institutions," - said Fernando Galán, Vice President of European Students‘ Union.
"U-Multirank" is an opposition to the currently widely used ranking systems, which are based on the lining up of the universities. It gives the opportunity to compare higher education institutions according to the different criteria, which are important to the relevant consumers. Instead of the planned five hundred schools, eight hundred seventy nine higher schools applied this year. The information for the ranking was collected from the international rankings biblio-metric and patent databases, the data was presented by the higher schools, supporting the initiative, and more than sixty thousand student surveys were conducted. Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS), Centre for Higher Education (CHE), company for Science Popularization "Elsevier", and other partners participated in the ranking development. The delivery of other rankings is scheduled for March, 2015.
