ATHENA European University alliance

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) is a member of the ATHENA European University alliance.
Advanced Technology Higher Education Network Alliance (ATHENA) is one of the 41 transnational European university alliances supported by the European Commission and called to become the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education.
ATHENA alliance partners - medium-sized universities from seven European countries: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovenia aim to accompany and shape the digital transformation of societies through joint teaching, learning, research and development in the IT and electronic engineering areas in particular while adopting a resolutely interdisciplinary approach.
ATHENA undertakes to align activities with the EU policy and initiatives contributing to the transformative higher education and resilience against global crises by:
• Ensuring open, inclusive, sustainable, interdisciplinary and multi-layered collaboration within the ATHENA ecosystem;
• Sharing of and consolidating human, physical and intellectual resources;
• Creating a sandbox for testing new ideas and modes in a friendly and engaging environment;
• Providing high-quality services for international mobility of students and staff;
• Generating a culture of cooperation to develop innovative ideas for the benefit of society.

Signing the joint ATHENA Rectors’ declaration, 29 September 2021
On 29 September 2021, at the Slovenian Presidency of the EU Council, the rectors of ATHENA attended a meeting of the Secretaries of State and Directors of Higher Education and Research and signed a Joint Declaration.

ATHENA alliance management meeting at VILNIUS TECH, 27-29 October 2021
The first live ATHENA management meeting took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, on 27-29 October 2021. The event was hosted by the VILNIUS TECH and welcomes over 70 ATHENA alliance network academic and administrative staff members and student representatives. During this meeting, work package teams presented progress toward the developing final deliverables and the future steps. In addition, live discussions created an excellent opportunity to network, discuss current challenges in project implementation, and develop new solutions. The meeting agenda was completed with a campus tour and the social-cultural programme. See a video with highlights from this meeting.
National forum “Higher education transformation: alliances as a strategic direction” on 9 December 2021
The national forum gathered visionaries and practitioners from European Universities represented by the Lithuanian higher education institutions (including VILNIUS TECH representing the ATHENA alliance), government, public institutions and major stakeholders. During the presentations and discussions, the importance of European Universities playing a transformational role in the changes in the higher education system was emphasized. Key challenges and solutions for the development of the European Universities initiative in Europe and Lithuania were discussed, joint proposal for national higher education legislation was elaborated.

Round table discussion about the future of European Universities and signing of ATHENA consortium agreement, 28 February 2022
As part of the French Presidency of the European Union, the University of Orléans and ATHENA European alliance partners organised a round table discussion about the future of "European Universities" on 28 February 2022 in Orléans. During the meeting, rectors of ATHENA signed a consortium agreement, which confirmed the partners' intention to jointly pursue the ambitious goals of the European University Initiative.

First Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) for ATHENA alliance students in Spring semester 2022
In the spring semester of 2021/2022, VILNIUS TECH, the first among the ATHENA European University Alliance partners, organised 3 ECTS “Smart Community” Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) for the students of the Alliance. The programme provided students with a basic understanding of the Smart Community and Smart city, the digital technologies, data and innovations they use to make life easier for citizens. The first experience of organising the “Smart Community” programme was very successful and received enthusiastic feedback from students.
