Where Knowledge Meets Practice: The ABB Laboratory at VILNIUS TECH
The ABB laboratory at VILNIUS TECH has become a clear example of how cooperation between industry and academia contributes to the education of future engineers.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Artūras Medeišis, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, “This is currently the best-equipped laboratory in the Baltic region, offering a full range of devices – from basic electric drives and motors to various types of industrial electronics.”
Each semester, the laboratory hosts around one hundred students from both Lithuania and abroad for practical training. “This collaboration with ABB gives students the opportunity to work with world-class equipment and experience industrial work culture, helping them better understand what will be expected of them in the job market,” the Dean emphasizes.
Justinas Pesliakas, Head of ABB’s Drives and Motors Business in Lithuania, says the idea for the laboratory came from a real need to strengthen students’ practical skills. “We saw that students would benefit from having more hands-on opportunities, so this lab became an excellent addition to the study process,” he explains.
“For us, it’s not just about the equipment — it’s also about sharing knowledge. That’s why ABB specialists visit the university, give lectures, and work with faculty members to discuss current and future student needs,” adds Justinas. According to him, ABB’s mission is to “Help use resources sustainably and efficiently, because the greenest energy is the energy that is not consumed.”
