Global ranking system Webometrics: VGTU rating is rising
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) has significantly improved its position in the Webometrics, the global Ranking (Web) of World Universities. According to the latest news, VGTU has been recognized as more open, visible and influential university both in Lithuania and abroad.
The ranking system provides rating for almost 20 thousand universities worldwide. Recently VGTU has improved its rating and reached the top 1091 world universities ranking position, leaving 240 universities behind (former position –1332). Vilnius University (VU) fell down to the 705 position (former position – 673), Kaunas University of Technology (KUT) reached the 1134 position (former position – 1161). Other Universities of Lithuania line up in the lower position: Vytautas Magnus University – 1830, Mykolas Romeris University – 2141, Klaipeda University – 2974.
Analysing the Lithuanian higher education institutions, the top universities in Lithuania are: in the first place - VU, in the second place - VGTU and in the third place – KTU. Webometrics rated 46 institutions of higher education of Lithuania.
"Significant rise in the ratings of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities proves, that VGTU is consistently aspiring to become a more open, visible and influential university. The knowledge accumulated at the university, discoveries, innovations and achievements of the scientists became available not only for the international academic society, but also for every member of the society worldwide", - says professor, doctor Alfonsas Daniūnas, Rector of VGTU.
The universities of the United States of America are on the top list: the first position – Harvard University, the second position – Massachusetts Technological University and the third position – Stanford University. If compared with the data of Webometrics, published a year ago, Harvard University retained the leading position, while Massachusetts Technological University and Stanford University changed their places.
The Webometrics University Ranking System is based on the worldwide analyses, which is performed every half of a year, in order to assess the university web presence and visibility. The rating takes into account the number of external in-links, receiving the university web, the number of university web pages, found in the search systems, the number of scientists’ publications in the open access scientific data bases and influential scientific magazines as well as their quotation frequency. The rating is made by Cybermetrics Laboratory, established by Spanish National Research Council, providing rating data for almost 20 thousand universities worldwide.
