Marine Power Plant Operation

overview

Degree Professional Bachelor of Engineering Sciences and Ship Engineer professional qualification.
Certificate of Competency (CoC): Officer in Charge of an Engine Watch
Study Location Klaipėda (port city of Lithuania)
Length, structure 4 years (8 semesters), 12 months of mixed internship included in the programme (4 months on shore and 8 months on board of ships). Graduation is finalized with the defence of Final thesis and Final qualification examination.
A Certificate of Competency is issued upon fulfilment of all internship requirements.
Tuition fee for non EU citizens     4080 EUR per year
3300 EUR per year for EU and Ukrainian citizens 
Admission Requirement
  • Certificate of full secondary education with all annexes;
  • Certificate of state exams according to home country study requirement (mostly recommended exams: Mathematics, Physics and English);
  • A medical certificate on general health condition, and medical certificate for hearing examination, audiogram;
  • English language proficiency (level B1);
  • Applications must be accompanied by legalized English translations of all transcripts. Unofficial copies are not accepted. Please check country specific requirements for detailed information.
Special Note Foreign students of VILNIUS TECH LMA will be able to obtain a Lithuanian Seaman’s Book for their seagoing internship. However, after graduation, foreign citizens are not eligible to extend or renew the Lithuanian Seaman’s Book. Before applying for studies, please check the Seaman’s Book issuance requirements with the Ministry of Transport in your home country.

Main subjects Fundamentals engineering science; Ship‘s Auxiliary Machinery; Construction of Marine Internal Combustion Engines; Ship‘s Machinery Maintenance and Repairs; Ship‘s Refrigeration Plants; Marine Steam and Gas Turbine Plants; 6 Special Certificates based on the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW); and etc.

What is the purpose of this study programme?

Technological innovations in maritime transport are among the most modern in the global transport system, and this study programme is designed to train Officer in Charge of an Engine Watch (OICEW) who will ensure the successful operation and maintenance of modern ship engines and other energy equipment of various power.

What will you learn?

You will learn how:
  • apply knowledge of marine engineering, technology, natural and other sciences;
  • safely operate or repair power plants, auxiliary mechanisms, refrigeration units of ships of unlimited power;
  • lead the ship’s engine room or repair team, operating in accordance with the IMO Conventions, the requirements of safe shipping, ship and equipment classification societies, and quality standards.

Exchange period abroad?

Students, who are willing to study in foreign universities, will have an opportunity to study abroad during second or third semester. Also, it is possible to get grant for seagoing internship.

WHERE CAN YOU MAKE AN INTERNSHIP?

Duration of professional internship is 12 months, of which: 4-months onshore internship and 8-months seagoing internship:

Onshore internship:
  • Material Processing and Repair Works Workshop at LMA workshop (1st year);
  • Professional Practice of Ships Propulsion Machinery and Repair (during 2nd course).
  • The place of onshore internship: shipbuilding and repair yards
Seagoing internship:
  • Professional practice on seagoing ships (after the 2nd year);
  • Final Professional Sea-going practice (after the 3rd year).
The place of seagoing internship:
  • Seagoing vessels of 750 kW or more.

What are career opportunities after graduation?

After obtaining the Certificate of Competency, a graduate can hold the position of the third mechanic of the ship’s engine room while working on seagoing ships; after accumulating the seagoing services determined by the Ministry of Communication of the Republic of Lithuania, seafarer can take the position of the second mechanic of the ship, and then the position of the chief mechanic on ships with unlimited engine power of various purposes.
After completing the professional career of a seafarer, it is possible to work in shipbuilding and repair companies, as well as in the Maritime Department of the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the industry of inland water transport, etc. During the course of studies, students are given the opportunity to acquire the qualification of boat motorist.
