This February 16th was a double celebration for the university – VILNIUS TECH Senate Chairman and Head of the Department of Metallic and Composite Structures, Prof. Dr. Alfonsas Daniūnas, was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas in a solemn ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
Prof. Dr. A. Daniūnas has significantly contributed to the development of the university and the education of younger generations through his achievements and research work.
A reformer who enjoys tackling challenges from a different perspective, he has made remarkable contributions to the university and the country over the decades:

A reformer who enjoys tackling challenges from a different perspective, he has made remarkable contributions to the university and the country over the decades:
- Shaped a rational higher education system in independent Lithuania;
- Integrated Lithuanian science into European structures;
- Ensured high-level engineering education in Lithuania, dedicating considerable attention to young colleagues, doctoral, and master's students;
- Recognized the importance of technology and other sciences, maintaining a balanced proportion of these fields at the university through different periods;
- Under his leadership, VILNIUS TECH became one of the largest universities in Lithuania. His experience and initiated changes have led to significant advancements in science and education;
- Led and co-authored the first national steel structure design standards "Steel Structure Design" and the Lithuanian version of the European standard "Steel Structure Design";
- Since 1985, has published over 150 scientific articles, more than 40 conference papers, and contributed to 45 books as an author or co-author;
- Devotes significant time and effort to popularizing higher education, promoting various study fields, and enhancing public trust in engineers through personal example.
