Department History
The Department of Construction Technology was established at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI). The first head of the department was Assoc Prof Viktor Krušinskas, Candidate of Technical Sciences.
The Department delivered courses in construction technology, building materials, construction machinery, work standardisation, and occupational safety to students in full-time, evening, and part-time study programmes.
Prof habil Dr Edmundas Kazimieras Zavadskas joined the Department. With his arrival, research activities expanded, the principles of automated technological design systems for construction processes were developed, and the number of scientific publications increased significantly.
Prof habil Dr E. K. Zavadskas became the Head of the Department and defended his habilitation dissertation in engineering sciences, titled “Multi-criteria Seletonovation of Construction Technological Processes.”
After Prof E. K. Zavadskas became Rector of VISI, Assoc Prof Vladas Kriukelis, Candidate of Technical Sciences, was appointed Head of the Department.
The Department is headed by Assoc Prof Jonas Romualdas Šimkus, Doctor of Engineering.
In response to changes in specialist training and the expansion of research areas, the Department was renamed the Department of Construction Technology and Management (STM). The Construction Technology and Management Laboratory was established within the Department.
Training of three levels of construction professionals was introduced: bachelors, engineers, and masters. Master’s students specialised in construction technology and management or construction economics and management. In total, 87 study modules were developed. Bachelor’s graduates could continue their education in professional study programmes in construction economics and management or construction technology and organisation.
Assoc Prof Artūras Kaklauskas was appointed Head of the Department.
The Department’s name was updated to the Department of Construction Technology and Management. The Department coordinated the Master’s programme in Construction Management, organised professional studies in Construction Economics and Business, and began preparing Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates in Real Estate Management.
The first two-year distance learning Master’s programme in Real Estate Valuation in Lithuania was introduced. The programme leaders were Prof habil Dr E. K. Zavadskas and Prof habil Dr A. Kaklauskas. A total of 31 master’s students enrolled in the programme.
A two-year distance learning Master’s programme in Construction Business and Economics was also established.
The Department delivered the following main study programmes: Construction Management (with specialisations in Construction Economics and Business and Construction Technology and Management), Real Estate Management, specialised professional studies in Construction Economics and Business, and Master’s programmes in Construction Management and Real Estate Valuation.
That year, the Department graduated a record number of students: 220 bachelors, 50 engineers, and 53 masters.
Due to the increasing scale of activities, a new Department of Construction Economics and Real Estate Management (SENTV) was established. The head of the department became Prof habil Dr A. Kaklauskas.
The Department of Construction Technology and Management and the Department of Construction Economics and Real Estate Management (SENTV) were merged to form the Department of Construction Management and Real Estate. The head of the department became Prof habil Dr Artūras Kaklauskas.
