The Competence Centre of Intermodal Transport and Logistics (VGTU, CCITL) was established in 2007 by the initiative of researchers and transport business structure.
The establishment of a unique and innovative analytical centre CCITL was determined by the globalisation processes affecting development trends of the Lithuanian transport market. According to the experience of Western European countries, new forms of the organisation of transport system directed to an effective cooperation of various transport modes and their integration could respond to the dynamic political and economic changes. For that it is necessary to ensure effective cooperation between the researchers and business structures. The added value of such cooperation encouraged a group of VGTU scientists and researchers to institutionalise an innovative structure providing an opportunity for the representatives of scientific, public institutions and transport industry to work together in pursuing optimal effectiveness of the national transport system.
The main activity of CCITL is directed to the enhancement of intermodality of the Lithuanian transport system. It highlights that intermodality - one of the forms of the interface among transport modes - is a key factor contributing to the development of competitive capacity in the international transport service market. Therefore the main objective of CCITL is to develop the research-based recommendations ensuring the integration of different transport modes into a single competitive transport and logistics chain.
Taking account of a unique geostrategic location of Lithuania, effectively operating and competitive transport system is vital for both, Lithuania and Europe. In view of this, the mission and vision of CCITL is to effectively contribute to the integration of the national transport system in the regional and European transport system network, as well as in the global transport services market by adjusting the national transport system to the global market trends and making it less vulnerable to current challenges.
The main tasks of CCITL:
- To pursue scientific works and research in the sphere of intermodal transport;
- To contribute to the development of the intermodal transport network in the Baltic Sea Region;
- To disseminate information on the development of intermodal transport and innovations;
- To promote cooperation among the scientists, institutions and business representatives at national and transnational level;
- To submit proposals to public institutions on transport policy strategy and implementation measures;
- To organise round-table discussions, workshops and conferences related to the development and improvement of intermodality.
- To promote the development of urban and regional intermodal transport, establishment and development of public/private intermodal centres in Lithuania.
