This is the time for unprecedented innovation and bold experiments in the construction industry, and it is largely the result of technology. For the briskly developing information technologies among construction industries—architecture, engineering and construction industry (AEC) or architecture, engineering, construction and owner/operator (AECO)—concepts relating to computerized projects, computerized construction organisation, and object control are continuously growing and acquiring new levels of import.
The spread of building information modelling (BIM, SIM in Lithuanian) systems and their intensive growth are the main driving forces, essence, and content of contemporary digital and information technologies regarding building engineering, architecture and, to a large extent, projects related to environmental, transportation and infrastructural engineering.
Considering the mission of VGTU, the profiles of its specialists, its faculty structure and its historical development, the growth of BIM technologies is raised to a strategic level in the university's academic and research plans. The growth of BIM must be fully integrated into many specialised study programmes, beginning in the faculties of civil engineering and architecture, but also in the environmental engineering and fundamental sciences faculties. Other faculties and university entities can join this path based on their own academic and research interests as well as the relevance of BIM regarding the subject matter of their taught courses.
The Centre of Building Information Modelling Technologies was founded on April 2014. One of the centre's most important goals is to promote the growth of BIM methodology and raise it to a strategic level in the university's academic and research plans.
The Centre of Building Information Modelling Technologies sees its role as creating a strong regional centre for the development of BIM technologies in Lithuania and the Baltic States, primarily in the fields of environmental, transportation and infrastructural engineering. Within the centre, the growing level of theoretical knowledge will support processes that foster practical skills and perfect professional qualifications, while also developing both strong ties between scholarship and business and a cycle of improved innovation in construction industries.
On 5th of March 2014, 13 building industry Associations of Lithuania came together to found the Public body “Digital Construction” whose ultimate goal is to develop the BIM Methodology and Digital Construction in Lithuania over the Period 2014-2020
