What are the study programme outcomes?

Designed in 18th century by Laurynas Gucevičius, both Vilnius Archcathedral Basilica and the Town Hall have immediately become the city symbols. The most famous Lithuanian architect not only introduced a new direction in architecture - classicism based on antique architecture heritage interpretations - but also created classicistic face of the city, although both the Cathedral and  Town Hall have been only two of the many buildings in the center of Vilnius. In addition, these L. Gucevičius' projects clearly demonstrated the architect's supported ideas on social equality of the epoch of Enlightenment.
Although historically Architecture was perceived as art and science of building design, it now focuses on the social mission. By means of architecture we can create a living environment for reduction of social exclusion to promote equality or the formation of sustainable communities. Such an environment can encourage responsible consumption and even help to solve the climate change issues.
It is now possible to design a housing development for safe habitation that would ensure people's communication and cooperation. Architectural expression is influenced by many factors: constantly changing requirements, technology or even fashion trends. Currently much attention is paid to eco-friendly and sustainable development principles. A new approach to building longevity has now gained a paramount importance. Contrary to the previously prevailing approach, when we had been building once and for all, now we need to evaluate the life cycle of a building.
The aim of Architecture study program is to educate a socially responsible, continually improving architect of great erudition, who in cooperation with specialists from other fields is be able to carry out architectural activities holistically, rationally and in creative way, while solving complex problems of physical space shaping in global and constantly changing environment.
Architecture is one of the professions regulated by the European Union. Thus, meeting these requirements, after five years of integrated studies, the graduate of the programme immediately acquires the master's of arts degree. The study programme is constantly notified by the European institutions, which are responsible for regulated professions. Having acquired professional experience, the certified graduates of the study programme may provide professional services throughout the EU without any restrictions.

How can you get into the programme?

For Architecture programme, entrance test is requered (example). Foreign students can take the test online on a previously agreed time. The test is reviewed by vice dean of the faculty and programme coordinator.

Test duration is 4 hours, it consists of two tasks.

First task is architectural composition. The aim of the task is to prepare presentation of proposed design of the architectural object and its environment. Single A3 sheet of paper should be used for presentation of the project. The project should include the plan, front and side views of the object as well as perspective view of the object rendered in natural environment. Additional views or details are allowed if necessary. The test should be executed in free hand technique using graphite pencil.

Second task is free hand drawing task of proposed construction (two or three elements). A3 size paper sheet and graphite pencil use only.

What will you learn?

Some key abilities that Architecture study programme helps students develop include:
  • The ability to link the resent knowledge of architectural history, theory, and other humanitarian, social and technological sciences and arts, addressing topical issues in architecture;
  • The ability to apply knowledge of building structures, engineering systems, material science in the preparation of architectural projects;
  • The ability to define architectural tasks, formulate original hypothesis, carry out studies, interpret the study results and use them to justify architectural design solutions;
  • The ability to create architecture understanding the complexity of the design, combining the aesthetic, functional, social, technical, economic, environmental and legal requirements;
  • The ability to creatively, innovatively and responsibly deal with complex architecture, urbanism, landscape and heritage policy issues and challenges shaping the physical environment in unfamiliar and constantly changing context.

Where can you do an internship?

Internship of industrial projection is performed in the companies of architecural projection where students during two months develope practical skills of projection. As a result, during the internship students strengthen their theoretical knowledge and experience of academic projection. Students participate in works of professional and creative collective supervised by experencied architect. According to this, students understand and gain knowledge about structure, particular activity of company and are associated with team work.

What is opinion of students graduated from architecture?

‘Study program of architecture is not only new discoveries, but also responsibility! Here I learned the main lesson of life. I realized that my contact with paper can absolutely change people’s life. Therefore, when I do every work I try to not forget creatively express my minds and delicately and responsively deal with architectural measures.’ (Milda, graduated from architecture in 2010).

‘I am very happy that I chose Bachelor's and Master's studies in faculty of architecture. I studied in VILNIUS TECH not for diploma, but for my interest. Therefore, I liked very much that every subject is taught by real specialists of particular field. Lecturers every subject teach not only by books, but also very lively, sometimes not in the auditorium, but outside the university - in the old city by touching real heritage. Also, I would like to emphasize strong personalities in projection, history of architecture and in the fields of heritage, non-traditional methods of context analysis. What is more, I appreciate that faculty of architecture keep international contacts with foreign universities and it is exciting to see young collective in my faculty. Definitely, there is something what I should improve, so I try to do my best in further studies in faculty of architecture by reaching doctoral degree. As a result, I seek doctoral degree because I would like to relate my scientific future with VILNIUS TECH University which is the best higher school of architecture in Lithuania.’ (Lukas, Master's degree student).
